An ethical dog breeder will not breed a dog just to make puppies. They hold high standards and breed only dogs that have had medical exams that prove their dog is not a carrier of eye and hip diseases, to name two.

An ethical dog breeder only specializes in a few breeds at most. They do not breed dogs of every kind. They do not cross breed dogs and make mutts.

An ethical dog breeder does not sell to pet stores. They are very particular who buys their dogs. A friend of mine was turned down by a breeder because the breeder sensed his wife was not fond of dogs.

One dog breeder I know, requires each puppy candidate owner to fill out a lengthy questionnaire. They want to know if you have an air conditioned house, a large fenced yard, etc.

The reason is, they sell Finnish Lapphund arctic dogs that cannot take the heat. They need a large yard because they are high energy dogs. An apartment is just too small to handle this breed of dog.

An ethical dog breeder may require a contract to purchase their puppies. They have substantial financial penalties if the dog is bred to any dog of any other breed.

Of all the pet business ideas, a dog breeder will spend a significant amount of money on dog shows, medical exams for their dogs and new born pups, food, and kennel equipment.

A dog breeder of pure breeds can charge as much as $1,000 per puppy. A friend of mine who breeds English Setters, charges as much as $1,500 for a 9 month pup that has been partially trained to hunt, $3,500 for a fully trained dog, and $1,000 for a new 8 week old pup.

Avoid Creating A Puppy Mill

Puppy mills are dog breeders that breed numerous dogs in filthy and cramped conditions. They have little regard for the health and genetics of the dogs they breed.

The large number of dogs create conditions where the pups are not socialized. Mother dogs have been known to eat their offspring. The pups are not well adjusted like an ethical breeder produces.

Many states have enacted laws to prevent the establishment of puppy mills and cruelty to animals.

If you intend to breed numerous dogs as a business you may need a license to do so. The Humane Society has documented state puppy mill laws. (new window) It is free to download. Get a copy.

Promoting Your Dog Breeding Business

Most ethical dog breeders promote their business by attending dog shows. They want their dogs to win awards that demonstrate the standard of their breed. This adds to their credibility as ethical breeders.

Some dogs are entered into agility contests. The dog handler directs his dog through an obstacle course. The dog is judged for his accuracy and timeliness in completing the course.

Hunting dogs are entered into field trials. Here the dog is judged for its ability to hunt the wild game for which they are breed to find. The skill of the dog to hunt is held in higher esteem than their good looks.

Herding dogs are entered into herding contests. The dogs are judged for their ability to follow its master's commands and signals to herd the sheep as desired.

Get A Website

You need a website today. It is expected of most every business. The dog breeding business is no different.

Your website will help you find customers across the country. I found the breeder for Finnish Lapphunds, a rare breed, that I was looking for in another state by searching on Google.

At that time I had never heard of this breed. I was searching for rare breeds and arctic dogs. A Canadian website led me to the breeder's website.

Had the breeder followed SBI's (new window) process, no doubt she could have ranked higher in the search engines. Fortunately she had a website that was linked by a better website that did rank.

This just shows how important it is to have a website for your business today. I would never have found this breeder in the Yellow Pages of my telephone book. She wasn't there.

Building a website is not hard. SBI makes it doable even for the beginner. Not only do they have a process that implements like a business plan, they have all the tools you need to build a website that works.

I use SBI to build all my websites. I'm glad I switched to SBI. It has made all the difference in my online business.

Watch this video (new window) and see how SBI can help you.
